DSR Enews: Dec 2017/Jan 2018
  A word from the DSR...
Steelhead season started out strong this year, which was encouraging considering how slow the last few years have been. Anglers reported decent numbers of fresh chrome throughout November and into December. Late December brought bitter cold that lasted into early January, and with the cold came plenty of snow! This was followed up by a mid-January thaw with rising temperatures and high water to match! As we write this in late January, temperatures have moderated and flows have subsided, so anglers are back out on the run.  Thankfully the high water cleared most of the shelf ice so the upper two thirds of the Run are accessible. Anglers have been reporting decent activity with steelhead, and even a few rainbows and a brown were reported!

Salmon River Hatchery Shows Off Exciting Updates

With completion of the first phase of renovations, the Salmon River Fish Hatchery has begun showing off its dazzling improvements to the public. The hatchery is one of DEC’s most popular tourist destinations, attracting tens of thousands of visitors annually.

The hatchery’s fish culturists raise millions of trout and salmon for release into the Great Lakes. They also serve as educational ambassadors to visitors of all ages and from places near and far. Eye-popping features have been added to enhance the visitors’ experience, with improved interpretive displays and fish tanks.
